Babe Ruth’s jersey, worn when he famously “known as the shot” throughout the 1932 World Collection, has been offered for a record-breaking sum.
Ruth’s jersey offered for $24.12m at public sale, changing into the most costly merchandise of sporting memorabilia ever offered at public sale.
The BBC reports that the sale dwarfs the previous record sum of $12.6m paid in 2022 for a 1952 Topps baseball card that includes New York Yankees outfielder Mickey Mantle.
Chris Ivy, director of sports activities auctions at Heritage Auctions, known as it “essentially the most important piece of American sports activities memorabilia ever provided at public sale.”
“If this was a chunk of artwork, this could be like shopping for the Mona Lisa,” Ivy added.
Babe Ruth was carrying the jersey when he performed for the New York Yankees throughout Sport Three of the 1932 World Collection in opposition to the Chicago Cubs.
