FilmNation has inked a collection of worldwide offers on Pablo Larraín’s newest biopic Maria following a buzzy debut at Venice final evening.
The movie was picked up by Studiocanal (UK, Germany, Poland), ARP (France), 01 Distribution (Italy), Solar Distribution (LATAM/Spain/Portugal/South Africa), and The Searchers (Benelux).

Directed by Larraín from a screenplay by Steven Knight (Spencer, Peaky Blinders), Maria follows the life story of the world’s biggest opera singer, Maria Callas, performed by Angelina Jolie, throughout her ultimate days in Seventies Paris.

The movie cooked up a wholesome 10-minute ovation following its debut final evening in Venice. Larraín and Jolie attended the premiere alongside solid members Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher. After the screening, the Sala Grande crowd was emotional and even chanted Jolie’s title. The 2-time Oscar nominee shed a tear as she walked down from the gallery to wave on the viewers.
The staff had all attended a press conference earlier in the day, throughout which Larraín stated Callas was “the best voice in historical past who had a really lovely and troublesome life.” He added, “In fact, this film wouldn’t exist with out Angelina.”
Maria marks the third movie in Larraín’s work exploring iconic feminine protagonists following Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021).
The Venice Movie Pageant runs till September 7.
