With a storied stage and display profession behind him, Harvey Fierstein is denouncing Donald Trump‘s takeover of the Kennedy Center.
The 4x Tony winner, who has starred in a number of Kennedy Middle productions through the years, known as out the Trump administration with an impassioned assertion on Instagram after greater than 20 exhibits have been canceled or postponed.
“A couple of of us have written to ask how I really feel about Trump’s takeover of The Kennedy Middle. How do you assume I really feel?” wrote Fierstein within the post. “The exhibits I’ve written at the moment are banned from being carried out in our premiere American theater. These exhibits, most of which have been carried out there up to now, embrace, KINKY BOOTS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, TORCH SONG TRILOGY, HAIRSPRAY, SAFE SEX, CASA VALENTINA, SPOOKHOUSE, A CATERED AFFAIR, THE SISSY DUCKLING, BELLA BELLA and extra.
“I’ve been within the battle for our civil rights for greater than 50 years solely to observe them snatched away by a person who truly couldn’t care much less. He does these things solely to placate the spiritual proper so that they’ll look the opposite method as he savages our political system for his personal glorification,” he continued.
Fierstein stated of Trump, “He assaults free speech. He assaults the free press. He assaults America’s allies. His solely allegiance is to himself – the golden calf. My fellow People I warn you – that is NOT the way it begins. That is how freedom ENDS! Trump might have declared ‘woke’ as useless in America. We should show him flawed. WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!”
Fierstein’s assertion comes as Trump visited the Kennedy Center this week, following his appointment as the Center’s new chairman after he ousted half the group’s board members, who have been nominated by Joe Biden.
Since Trump took over, Shonda Rhimes has resigned from the board of the Kennedy Middle, and Issa Rae has canceled a show scheduled for the venue. In the meantime, Trump has faced backlash from supporters of the Kennedy Middle’s canceled touring children’s musical Finn.
Trump beforehand threatened to make the Kennedy Middle “GREAT AGAIN,” announcing his plan final month to take away these “who don’t share our Imaginative and prescient for a Golden Age in Arts and Tradition.”
