Pharrell Williams is grateful somebody took a threat on his model of unconventional storytelling.
At a current screening of his new animated documentary Piece by Piece, the 13x Grammy winner expressed his gratitude to Lego‘s head of worldwide leisure Jill Wilfert for saying “sure” and collaborating on the movie.
“I don’t need to make all of it heavy, however she stated sure to a Black man’s story, from a marginalized neighborhood. Once I was younger, that’s my origin story,” stated Williams, in response to The Independent.
Over the previous decade, the 75-year-old toy firm has expanded into animated options, with The Lego Film (2014), The Lego Batman Film (2017), The Lego Ninjago Film (2017) and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019).
Williams added on the screening, “Lego might have stated no. I’m Black, in case you hadn’t figured that out. However they stated sure. I’m not Batman. This isn’t Harry Potter mental property. It’s simply me, from Virginia. However they stated sure.”
Premiering Oct. 11 in theaters, Piece by Piece is a novel biopic that explores Williams’ life and work within the animated Lego type, a suggestion the artist made in early conversations with director Morgan Neville, serving as a metaphor for the ‘Completely happy’ artist’s inventive imaginative and prescient of the world.
“I didn’t need to do a documentary,” stated Williams final month at Deadline’s Studio through the Toronto Worldwide Movie Competition. “And the minute that I agreed to, I knew I needed it to be in Lego and I knew I needed Morgan to be the storyteller. I turned it over to him. I like what he’s performed from 20 Toes from Stardom to even the brand new Steve Martin [doc]. This man’s like actually good at it.”
