EXCLUSIVE: Brooklyn-based distributor KimStim has picked up all U.S. rights to Quebecois filmmaker Philippe Lesage’s characteristic Who by Fire.
The movie debuted on the Berlin Film Festival the place it gained Greatest Movie within the Era 17 competitors. The movie may have its U.S. premiere on the upcoming New York Film Festival.
KimStim’s co-president Ian Stimler negotiated the cope with Pamela Leu, Head of Gross sales on the Belgian-based Be For Movies.
The movie follows Jeff, a 17-year-old aspiring filmmaker who joins his pal Max’s household at a retreat hosted by former filmmaker Blake Cadieux. The synopsis reads: Tensions escalate as previous conflicts between Blake and Max’s father, Albert, resurface whereas Jeff navigates his emotions for Max’s sister, Aliocha, amidst the unfolding drama.
The movie was produced by Unité Centrale and Shellac Sud. Balthazar Lab shot the movie and Mathieu Bouchard-Malo was the editor.
Lesage is greatest identified for his documentary work like The Coronary heart That Beats (2010), which gained the award Jutra for Greatest Documentary Movie on the 14th Jutra Awards in 2012. He transitioned to fiction with Les démons (The Demons, 2015), which earned robust critiques and quite a few prizes at festivals after premiering in competitors on the San Sebastian Movie Competition. His subsequent movie Genèse (2018) debuted on the Locarno Competition and went on to play Rotterdam IFF, AFI Fest, and New Administrators/New Movies (Moma/Lincoln Middle).
The New York Movie Competition runs from September 27 to October 14.
